The Dux is to be congratulated not only for outstanding results in the VCE, but also for the keen and substantial involvement in school life since joining Caulfield Grammar at Year 7 in 2003. In 2008, the Dux has been involved as a member of the School Committee (the senior student body), a Student Editor of the Caulfield Grammarian magazine, a House Vice-Captain, a House Community Service Representative, and a House Debating Captain. In addition, the Dux has received many Speech Night Prizes including; The Horrie Webber Prize for the Editors of The Caulfield Grammarian, The Ada Coles Prize for Service, The Lyle Buntine Memorial Prize for Science and The School Prize for Mathematics. Our Dux was offered scholarships by both Monash and Melbourne Universities.

Great Music

Students work with Australia’s best – The Idea of North
 The Idea of North concert

Leading Australian vocal jazz quartet The Idea of North joined Caulfield Grammar School students for a day of workshops and performances on 28 April 2008.  Described variously as simply an ‘a cappella quartet’, a ‘jazz vocal quartet’ or by James Morrison as ‘the best contemporary a cappella quartet in Australia’, The Idea of North has established a national and international reputation. They worked with our choirs from all three metropolitan campuses and the “No Strings Attached” Stage Band to prepare repertoire for an evening concert - exploring incredible vocal sounds and using their superb arrangements.

The evening concert for more than 500 people was outstanding with our students experiencing a unique performing opportunity. The concert contained an absorbingly diverse repertoire of songs from jazz, pop and contemporary standards and ballads, liberally mixed with original compositions and all superbly arranged in the group’s unique style. This proved to be a wonderful learning experience for our musicians.

European Orchestral Music Tour 2008

The school's Chamber Orchestra is comprised of twenty-four students who traveled and performed in nine European countries in June 2008. The group's first performance was held in Salzburg and after a busy touring schedule that included Budapest, Bratislava and Prague, the students completed their European Tour with a Final Concert held at the International Music Festival in Vienna, Austria. James Morrison performs with Caulfield Grammar students

A musical highlight for 2005 took place on 7 April when Caulfield Grammar School students joined with leading jazz musician, James Morrison for an afternoon of workshops and performances. James is a multi-instrumentalist and is the ever-smiling face of Australian jazz who has been a feature of the Australian music scene for over 25 years. As well as headlining the evening concert at Robert Blackwood Hall, Monash University, James Morrison took on the role of teacher when he worked with students from the school's four stage bands to present a masterclass on many aspects of jazz performance including rehearsal and practice techniques, and ensemble skills.

The 18 girls and boys in Caulfield Grammar's cross-campus senior stage band, "No Strings Attached"  had the honour of opening the concert which featured James Morrison as the special guest soloist.  James and the students presented unforgettable performances of Hay Burner, The Flinstones Theme, I Remember Clifford,  and Manteca.  James and his quintet then went on to wow the audience with two sets of jazz standards and originals.

This was an outstanding learning experience for students that gave them an insight into the demands of being a professional musician and an up close listen to James' magnificient talent.

Great Sports

Many of our students achieve selection in zone, regional, Victorian and Australian representative teams in a variety of sports, and compete in championships throughout the city, state, nation and overseas. Congratulations to all the girls and boys at Caulfield who are enjoying success in their chosen sports.

Girls Swimming and Diving Team

The Girls swimming and diving teams defended their 7 year winning streak at the APS finals in March, and once again took out the competition with a lead of 17 points.

Great Writing

Philip Liberatore, a Year 9 student won the Federal Government’s 2006 inaugural Captain Cook Essay Competition. As the National winner, Philip will travel to Captain Cook’s birthplace in Yorkshire, England.

Philip was presented with his individual prize and also a $1000 educational gift voucher for history resources for the campus library at the school’s morning assembly on Monday 4 June by Senator Kay Patterson.

Philip's essay was chosen over other students from across Australia, with essays exploring Lieutenant James Cook’s arrival at Botany Bay. The essay competition is designed to encourage students to learn more about Australia’s history.

Learning Journeys

After sailing on the Enterprise, originally a ship that brought many immigrants to Australia, as part of Year 9 Learning Journeys, Hailey composed the following poem and also took and developed an accompanying photo for her Photography elective.

The Pier
A glistening sun, a cool wind, a perfect day
The ships quietly waited aside the pier
Crisp golden leaves falling on my shoulders
With nothing but the acute silence surrounding me

The naked waters flow into the rocks
As the seagulls fly into the east
Smells of crunchy chips and grilled fish
Urging them to detour

We stepped aboard for the journey to come
Shipmates and crewmembers united as one
The sails were high and the ropes were tight
The Enterprise our voyager, set sail with pride.
