Kathy Walker, a renowned Educational Consultant specialising in early childhood education will conduct a Readiness for School seminar at Caulfield Grammar School's Malvern and Wheelers Hill Campuses. Ideal for parents with toddlers and young children, the seminar will enable them to make an informed assessment about the readiness of their child for an early learning program.

The Centre for Early Learning Excellence at Wheelers Hill Campus is one of the finest new facilities for children's learning in Melbourne. Opened in 2003 at the Wheelers Hill Campus, the Centre for Early Learning Excellence builds on the School's reputation for highly innovative approaches to education. The Centre comprises Pre-Prep classrooms that support the acclaimed Reggio Emilia approach, along with Prep Classrooms, a Science and Technology Centre and a Centre for Special Needs. The physical environment is considered an important source of learning and great attention is given to the look and feel of the classroom. Clever design enables children to be aware of activities throughout the building, to have spaces of varying volumes with bountiful natural light, and internal/external views to stimulate and encourage an awareness of colour, texture, sounds and nature. The learning activities are supported by our specialist staff. 

The playground takes children on a safe, sensory adventure and invites them to be creative and imaginative at every turn. It has many different aspects, textures, elements and discrete play-spaces that all combine to provide an interesting outdoor learning space.

Most adults take their perception of balance, touch and movement for granted, however these are critical skills that help young girls and boys develop physically. The playground is a child's paradise and it complements the Centre for Early Learning Excellence beautifully.

Science and Technology Centre
This is a specialised learning space where computer technology, robotics and experimentation are integrated into the learning programs enjoyed by our junior school students at all year levels.

Special Needs Centre
A Special Needs Centre is also available for our specialist teachers and those students involved in the School's Challenge Program. It is a flexible space designed for both small and large groups and allows for the delivery of individualised programs for children when required. >> LEARNING MENTORS

In an initiative designed to improve significantly the learning of every individual student, each Year 7 and Year 8 class has a dedicated Learning Mentor (in addition to the subject specialist teacher), who monitors the academic and pastoral progress of each child in their allocated class group. This is a further way of achieving our focus on both knowing the learning style of each child and on ensuring that each child's experience is as good as it can be. Caulfield Grammar School is the first school to introduce this innovative practice at secondary level.

The Learning Mentor is a qualified teacher who attends each core subject class every day, with these same students - English, Mathematics, Science, Chinese, German, SOSE/Humanities, Information Technology, Personal Development and Art. (The Learning Mentor will attend additional subject classes whenever possible.) The Mentor monitors learning environments, observes and assesses the learning preferences of each child, and the academic and social development of each child, whilst supporting the specialist teachers who facilitate the formal learning activities. There are, therefore, two teachers with each Year 7 and Year 8 class in all core subjects enabling better teaching and learning to take place.

Through a structured program, the Learning Mentors provide valuable information about the progress of each individual student to the classroom teachers, pastoral care staff and through them, also to parents. The Mentors also work closely with the school's Special Education specialists to ensure the learning needs of individual students are being met across learning areas.

>> VCE @ YEAR 10

Students begin studying VCE subjects in Year 10 and particular emphasis is given to helping students focus on preparation for entry to the tertiary course or career of their choice. Year 10 students at Caulfield Grammar are able to include in their course of study a range of VCE units suited to their interests and abilities. This means in effect that the VCE is spread over three years rather than two, enabling students to tailor their own individual learning journeys for these three critical senior years. It also means that students in Year 10 can sample a wider range of the academic and additional learning programs that Caulfield Grammar offers. It will also allow a more comprehensive induction into VCE Units 3 and 4, which determine students' ENTER scores, and therefore their pathway to tertiary studies and career choices.

It's an innovative approach to meeting individual needs learning and providing pathways to success.

>> ART AND COFFEE

Coffee lovers frequenting Cowderoys Dairy Cafe in West St. Kilda and Buffalo Cafe in Ripponlea are enjoying exhibitions of artworks by students from Caulfield Grammar School. They are so good, cafe customers are snapping them up! See for yourself at Buffalo Cafe, opposite Ripponlea Railway Station and at Cowderoys Dairy Cafe, Cowderoy Street, West St Kilda.

>> YEAR 9 LEARNING JOURNEYS

With our collective knowledge of how students at Year 9 best learn, gained from research and the successful Internationalism Program at our Nanjing Campus, the concept of Learning Journeys has been introduced to Year 9 to supplement the core learning areas of English, Mathematics and Extension Mathematics, Science, and Physical Education.

With one day each week devoted to Learning Journeys, students are involved in an experiential and holistic learning model with focus on activities outside of what we view the traditional classroom to be. It is experiential, reflective and based on real-world problem solving - making it highly appropriate for students at this stage of their development. A team of specialist teachers leads the Learning Journeys, and at a ratio of 1 staff member to 15 students, the individual needs of students are well catered for. The curriculum is highly differentiated for each learner and is driven by assessment for learning of generic life long learning skills.

Some examples of Learning Journeys include:

• United Nations Week. Students from Wheelers Hill and Caulfield campuses come together to simulate the workings of the real United Nations. Students study countries and issues including human rights, poverty, refugees, sustainable development, indigenous people, disarmament, climate change, AIDS, drug control and crime prevention, health, and terrorism.
  
• Sustainability - A local response to the drought. Students consider the impact of drought on the nation and explore the problem of reducing the school's water consumption. Student groups tackle the problem in a variety of ways coming up with a diversity of solutions.
  
• National identity. Students explore the diversity of the Australian people and the key influencing factors which have shaped the nation and its people through four major strands: immigration, tracking Australia's development through the arts, welfare and reconciliation.
