General Information for Overseas Students

Since 1881, Caulfield Grammar School has been shaping the future of young women and men by providing education of renowned excellence, and is recognised as one of Australia's most influential independent, coeducational schools.

Caulfield Grammar is a multi-campus school, providing education to around 3,000 girls and boys across its three Melbourne-based campuses. The school encourages cultural diversity and internationalism and has for many years allocated places to girls and boys from overseas.

Caulfield Grammar School is a school with a true international perspective. This is acknowledged by the school's own international campus in China, its custom of reaching out to best-practice schools from around the world to share ideas, and importantly the understanding of the valuable exchange that occurs through inviting international students to study at Caulfield Grammar.

As one school with five campuses, Caulfield Grammar offers a broader range of learning experiences and resources than is available at most schools. The shared expertise of a large group of specialist staff, top quality facilities and the support of a large community network are clear advantages for students. By offering girls and boys a diverse curriculum based on sound traditional values, Caulfield Grammar School provides many opportunities for girls and boys to broaden their horizons or pursue a line of study to the highest level.

Caulfield Grammar has links with Melbourne's major universities, providing students with the opportunity to undertake first-year university subjects whilst still attending secondary school. Students at Caulfield have a history of strong academic results in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) - Victoria's internationally recognised senior school certificate - and virtually all have been offered a place in a tertiary course of their choice at Australian universities or Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions. Should overseas students decide to stay in Melbourne to complete their tertiary education, they can do so in the knowledge that the city is home to some of Australia's, and the world's, leading universities.

Living in Australia

Most of Australia's 20 million inhabitants live in cities or towns near the east coast. Australia is a majority English speaking country and most people connect with Christianity-based religions. It is a politically stable, safe and tolerant multi-cultural nation. Melbourne, the capital city of the state of Victoria has a reputation as one of the world's most liveable cities.

Melbourne and its suburbs are home to over 3.5 million people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Some of the most memorable experiences available to overseas students living in Australia will be spending leisure time enjoying the sunny beaches, open parklands, waterways, beautiful gardens and rugged bush which surround most major towns and cities.

Caulfield Grammar School's Caulfield Campus is located just eight kilometres from Melbourne's city centre offering students easy access to major libraries, cinemas, arts and cultural centres, museums, and world-class sporting venues through a convenient public transport system of trams, buses, trains and taxis.

The school's Wheelers Hill Campus is located in Melbourne's eastern suburbs on 50 acres, surrounded by parkland and well serviced by transport links.

Accommodation Options

Where students live and the quality of their living conditions will affect their stay in Australia. Prospective students should carefully consider all available options. Caulfield Grammar School's Registrar will be able to provide assistance in making a choice best suited to your son's or daughter's needs.

Boarding
Girls and boys can board at the school's Caulfield Campus where accommodation is provided for approximately 100 students from country Victoria, other states of Australia, and overseas. The Head of Boarding, the Deputy Head of Boarding, their families, and residential staff ensure that boarders are helped to feel secure in a supportive and caring environment. Girls and boys share recreation and dining facilities but are accommodated in separate boarding houses. Staff ensure proper supervision of all living arrangements, including meals, social activities and study times. Caulfield Grammar School is one of very few schools in metropolitan Melbourne (and the only member of the Victorian Association of Public Schools) to offer boarding facilities to both girls and boys - sisters and brothers.

Homestay
Families may wish to consider this excellent alternative to boarding. Caulfield Grammar School has a strong group of pre-selected Homestay families available for selection by overseas students. Homestay usually consists of a single furnished room in a private home where the host family provides all meals. Well selected Homestay is a safe and rewarding alternative to boarding and can be an advantageous way of helping senior overseas students settle into the Australian community.

Overseas Students' Support

Every effort is made to ensure that new overseas students are made welcome, are familiarised with their new environment, and enjoy the time they spend at Caulfield Grammar. Orientation activities are conducted specifically for overseas students, and an Overseas Students' Coordinator is designated to assist students with any issues that may arise concerning their school life. The Overseas Students' Group conducts social activities during the year and is led by overseas students with the support of the Overseas Students' Coordinator.

Pastoral Care

While pastoral care is integrated into every activity conducted by the school, the House System provides a structure in which the senior staff that lead each House develop knowledge of the needs and abilities of students, and work with the students and other staff to ensure that each student's learning experience is the best it can be. Many organised activities take place that build House spirit and camaraderie between students from all year levels. The Overseas Students' Coordinator, counsellor and chaplain are also available to provide assistance with any personal issues that may arise.
