With menus ranging from McCopycat to Mexican, our budding hospitality entrepreneurs have been busy creating, cooking and serving the hungry hordes during their two-week Year 9 Café Business Program.

This unique program gives an insight into running a small business, immersing students in the unique environment of a purpose-built commercial café kitchen. Over two weeks our students apply for roles, create a culinary theme and menu for the week, learn profit and loss, food handling and hygiene, and then open the café to the School community to practice what they have learned.

Participating in the Café Program is not only about learning new skills – it’s also about discovering skills they already have. Some comments from our budding entrepreneurs:

“I discovered I can actually cook, that I’m a good problem solver and I can be organised and work under pressure …”

“One thing I have taken away is teamwork skills, which is key in a café. When you have up to 100 hungry students waiting in a line for food it can cause a lot of stress on everyone – from the cashiers at the front all the way to the chefs in the back.. Working together as a team alleviates this stress.”
