Caulfield Campus Middle School delivered an unforgettable theatrical experience last week with a unique double-bill season featuring two vibrant productions – Madagascar JR performed by Year 7 students and Frozen JR performed by Years 8 and 9. Across three energetic performances, the Cripps Centre’s Lindsay Cuming Auditorium was alive with excitement as audiences enjoyed both shows in one evening, presented as Act One and Act Two with a short interval between.
From the moment the lights dimmed on Opening Night, it was clear that this was going to be a special season. The auditorium buzzed with extraordinary energy – not just from families and friends, but from the students themselves. Performers from the second show eagerly watched and celebrated the cast of the first, and vice versa, amplifying the atmosphere with enthusiastic cheers and infectious joy. This shared spirit elevated both productions, creating a warm sense of camaraderie that resonated throughout the theatre.
Madagascar JR kicked off the evening with a colourful, comedic adventure as the Year 7 cast brought the beloved DreamWorks story to life. Their performances were packed with humour, charm and spirited character work, drawing plenty of laughter from the crowd. The playful choreography, vibrant costumes and bold personalities captured the heart of the original film while giving it a fresh Middle School twist.
After the interval, Frozen JR swept the audience into the kingdom of Arendelle as Years 8 and 9 delivered a heartfelt, beautifully staged interpretation of the hit Disney musical. With strong vocal performances, expressive acting and thoughtful storytelling, the cast brought to life themes of bravery, sisterhood and self-discovery. From icy magic to warm moments of humour, the production showcased the students’ growing confidence and skill on stage.
Behind both shows was a dedicated team of staff and students who ensured seamless set changes, imaginative staging and professional-quality production values. Their hard work supported the performers and helped create a polished, engaging theatrical experience for all.
Across the three-night season – 13, 14 and 15 November – audiences were treated to 2½ hours of music, laughter and heart, all powered by the enthusiasm and courage of our young performers. While there were plenty of standout moments, what shone most brightly was the collective energy and collaboration among the casts. Their passion for performing, whether on stage or behind the scenes, made this double-bill something truly special.
Congratulations to all Middle School students and staff involved in bringing Madagascar JR and Frozen JR to life – a joyful double celebration of creativity, teamwork and the thrill of live theatre.
