Building Common Ground

Harvard Model United Nations

A group of Politics students from Wheelers Hill Campus recently travelled to Sydney to participate in the Harvard Model United Nations (HMUN) conference, an immersive four-day experience that challenged them to think critically, collaborate effectively and engage with some of the world’s most pressing issues.

Bringing together students from schools across Australia, the conference centred on the theme Building Common Ground. Participants stepped into the role of international delegates, representing assigned countries within committees including UNESCO, UNHCR and UN-Habitat. Through formal debate, negotiation and collaboration, students worked to address complex global challenges and develop meaningful policy solutions.

Throughout the conference, students demonstrated confidence, maturity and a deep understanding of the issues before them. While advocating for their assigned national positions, they also remained open-minded and respectful of differing perspectives, embodying the diplomacy and cooperation that underpin the United Nations.

The experience required students to think on their feet, research extensively and communicate persuasively. Through impromptu speeches, committee discussions and resolution drafting, they honed valuable skills in critical thinking, public speaking, problem-solving and negotiation. Their efforts culminated in the successful drafting and passage of United Nations resolutions, reflecting both their preparation and their ability to work collaboratively towards shared outcomes.

Beyond the conference sessions, students had the opportunity to connect with like-minded peers from across the country, gaining new insights into international relations and the importance of constructive dialogue in addressing global challenges.

Congratulations to all students involved for the dedication, enthusiasm and distinction they brought to this student-led experience. Their participation in Harvard Model United Nations is a powerful example of learning beyond the classroom, fostering informed global citizens who are equipped to engage thoughtfully with an increasingly interconnected world.
