Year 6 Makers Step Into Design & Technology

Our Year 6 students at Wheelers Hill Junior have been making the most of their lunchtimes this term, spending time in the Design & Technology workshop with Martin Blake, Head of Design & Technology. What began as a simple invitation to “come and try” has quickly become a highlight of the week for many students.

Inside the workshop, students have explored the fundamentals of hands‑on making – from sanding and shaping timber to designing and creating their own bracelets and keychains. These small projects offer more than just a fun lunchtime activity; they give students an early, confidence‑building taste of what Design & Technology in Secondary School feels like.

The atmosphere has been one of curiosity, creativity and plenty of sawdust. Students have relished the chance to use real tools, experiment with materials and see their ideas come to life. For many, it has sparked new interest in design, problem‑solving and practical craftsmanship.

We extend a huge thank you to Martin Blake for opening up the workshop, guiding our young makers and inspiring them to explore what they can create with their own hands. Opportunities like this remind us how powerful experiential learning can be – especially when students are encouraged to step beyond the classroom and discover new skills.
